I use the "sss" sound with my dog. He knows it means no. I unconsciously began using it with my new grey and he taught me something about myself. He noticed I only use it when I'm looking for some control. The only time he uses it now is when he senses that I feel a little afraid. When he says, "sss" it's more like a question. I check myself. He's right. It's like he's saying, "Yeah, I can see you're acting tough, but I can feel how it is for you. I'll go along with what you say, but don't think I'm not in on the joke. I am."
